Contraceptive pills or birth control pills have become the most popular form of hormonal contraception amongst women for preventing unplanned pregnancy. This pill is a multiphasic pill, meaning that there are multiple dosages of the synthetic hormones taken by you throughout the four week period. Unlike other combined pills, Qlaira is to be taken for all 28 days of your menstrual cycle instead of just 21 days. The two chief ingredients, synthetic oestrogen and progestogen present in this pill are estradiol valerate and dienogest.
This pill works in three different ways in order to prevent you from being pregnant. First, Qlaira pills work by tricking your body into believing that ovulation has already occurred. This prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg into your womb. Second, the pill thickens the cervical mucus in the neck of your womb. This makes the journey of a sperm from your vagina to the womb difficult, thus preventing fertilisation of an egg. Finally, Qlaira pills prevent the thickening of the womb lining, making it difficult for a fertilised egg to implant.
